FAQ

What is Integrative Health?
Integrative Health involves conventional and complimentary approaches used together in a coordinated way and may work alongside any medication or medical treatment.  Along with a holistic and natural viewpoint, this describes Swan Integrative Health.
What is Holistic Medicine?
A holistic approach to medicine means looking at the entire person, recognizing that all aspects of an individual are connected and interdependent. It also means understanding that an organism is designed to sustain itself and has the ability to regulate and correct deficiencies that inhibit health. We can move from a state of imbalance to balance by encouraging this innate tendency toward maintaining the stability of an organism. While most medical treatments work to remove or manage a broken part, holistic practitioners target the root cause, desiring to stimulate the person’s natural ability to heal itself in body, mind, and spirit. Holistic treatments restore the body’s self-healing proficiency, which supports the pursuit of health.
What is Natural (or Naturopathic) Medicine?
Naturopathic Medicine is based on six fundamental principles:

First, do no harm ~ The process of healing includes the generation of symptoms, which happen to be expressions of the body attempting to heal itself. Therapies should be complementary to and synergistic with this healing process. Methods designed to suppress symptoms without removing underlying causes are considered harmful and are avoided or minimized.

Identify and treat the cause ~ Illness does not occur without cause. Underlying causes of disease must be discovered and removed or treated before a person can recover completely from illness. Symptoms are expressions of the body’s attempt to heal, but are not the cause of disease; therefore, naturopathic medicine addresses itself primarily to the underlying causes of disease, rather than to the symptoms. Causes may occur on many levels, including physical, mental-emotional, and spiritual. The physician must evaluate fundamental underlying causes on all levels, directing treatment at root causes as well as seeking relief of symptoms.

Treat the whole person ~ Health and disease are conditions of the whole being, involving a complex interaction of physical, spiritual, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, and social factors. The physician must treat the whole person by taking all of these factors into account. The harmonious functioning of all aspects of the individual is essential to recovery from and prevention of disease, and requires a personalized and comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment.

The healing power of nature ~ The body has the inherent ability to establish, maintain, and restore health. The physician’s role is to facilitate and augment this process, to identify and remove obstacles to health and recovery, and to support the creation of a healthy internal and external environment.

The physician as teacher ~ A cooperative doctor-patient relationship has inherent therapeutic value. The physician’s major role is to educate and encourage the patient to take responsibility for his or her own health. The physician is a catalyst for healthful change, empowering and motivating the patient to assume responsibility. It is the patient, not the doctor, who ultimately creates or accomplishes healing.

Prevention ~ The ultimate goal of naturopathic medicine is prevention. This is accomplished through education and promotion of lifestyle habits that foster good health. The physician assesses risk factors and hereditary susceptibility to disease and makes appropriate interventions to avoid further harm and risk to the patient. The emphasis is on building health rather than on fighting disease. (Back to top)

What is Homeopathy?
From the Greek, homois (similar) and pathos (suffering,) homeopathy was largely developed by Samuel Hahnemann, an unprecedented innovative thinker, who was repulsed by the eighteenth century medicine as it was being practiced. In 1790, after ingesting bark of the cinchona tree, which was used to treat malaria, he experienced the same symptoms as a malaria patient; the symptoms subsided when he stopped taking it. It occurred to him that if a substance can create an illness in a healthy person, it could stimulate the cure of those same symptoms in an ill person, resulting in the development of The Law of Similars, which states that “Like cures like.” This concept of “like cures like” goes back to Paracelsus (1491-1541,) and earlier yet, Hippocrates observed "That which may poison, may also heal."

Hahnemann tested or “proved” with clinical accuracy, the characteristics of various substances on groups of people by carefully tracking the symptoms experienced when taking each substance, resulting in The Law of Proving. The development of a widely practiced portion of medicine by one man with such clinical accuracy that is validated today is historically unmatched.

Another guiding principle is the use of a small dose. The goal is to stimulate the body’s own healing mechanism and the remedy serves as a type of “map” toward this goal. Less is more in homeopathy, allowing the unique dynamics of a person to respond gently and efficiently to repair itself. Since everyone is completely different, the amount of a remedy and repetition can vary from person to person for the same condition. Some people may need daily repetition while others may need a dose every six months or so.

Homeopathic remedies are powerful tools to aid the body because they are effective in strengthening the immune and healing systems of the body for both chronic and acute conditions, as well as for preventative measures. The practice of homeopathy takes into consideration the whole person, one’s physical, mental, and emotional health, and due to such dilute doses, according to the FDA there are no side effects and they are safe for all people, including children and the elderly. In addition to these qualities, they are also cost effective, making this a viable and effective option for many people. (Back to top)
